Paper Recycling at Saint Stephen Protomartyr
|
Our parish has joined a long list of
schools and parishes who participate in the
Abitibi Recycling
(formerly Donahue Recycling) Program.
Two green containers for paper recycling have been
placed towards the back of the Livingston
parking lot (located at the
corner of Wilmington and Livingston),
near the alley end of the lot. The gates
to the lot will remain unlocked except when
students are using the area.
You can recycle any kind of paper products, such as newspapers,
magazines, catalogs, junk mail, and office paper.
You can even place corrugated cardboard boxes
in the recycling container; just remember to flatten out boxes,
because we are paid by tonnage, not volume. One special request:
many people bring their recyclables to
the recycling containers in plastic bags; please do not
place the plastic bags in the containers.

Aluminum Can Recycling at Saint Stephen Protomartyr
|
Working with the Recycle Challenge,
a community recycling program, the parish earns money
that goes towards technology upgrades for the school. One blue container
for aluminum can recycling has also been placed towards
the back of the Livingston lot. We can earn quarterly
bonus prizes of $500 or $250, which are awarded if we meet
the following criteria: a minimum of 1,000 lbs. collected
during the quarter
and the most cans collected per member.
This program also helps teach parish members and
schoolchildren the importance of recycling and
environmental responsibility.
Here are some helpful tips on aluminum can recycling:
- Clean: Empty cans of liquid.
- Crushed: Saves space so more can be collected.
- Collected: Place cans in large bags and bring them to our school's blue aluminum collection bin.
Remember: please do not place plastic bags in the recycling containers.

Clothing Recycling at Saint Stephen Protomartyr
|
As of October 2006, there is a Clothing Collection Box
located on the Livingston parking lot, at the corner
of Wilmington and Livingston Avenues. The purpose of this box is to
provide our parish an easy way to redistribute used
clothing and household items for the benefit of St.
Stephen's School.
The program is easy to use:
- Simply gather your clothing, shoes, linens, toys,
books, and soft small household items. Items must be
non-breakable.
- Place your items in a regular 13 gallon size kitchen trash bag.
- Deposit the bags into the drop slot of the box.
MPS (Merchandise Pickup Service) collects these
items on a regular basis and donates 0.6 cents per pound
based on the volume of items collected. This money will
be used for our parish school. Most boxes average a
minimum of $300 per month.
Also, your donations are tax deductible, so please call
(314) 416-8282 if you would like a receipt. If you have
further questions about this program, contact Dee Brown
at (314) 352-7929 or Barb Schlanger at the parish office,
(314) 481-1133.

Recycling News
|
In 2004, the parish recycled 116 tons of paper and received
checks totaling $1738.81 for our efforts. We also received
a check for $43.00 for recycling aluminum cans. I would
like to thank all of you who were able to pitch in -- literally --
and help both our operating budget and the environment. How
about trying to raise $2000 in 2005?
